16 FEB 2023: IEEE PIKES PEAK SECTION MEETING (ALL MEMBERS) AND EXCOM MEETING
RISING STARS CONFERENCE , STATE OF THE IEEE PIKES PEAK SECTION, FUTURE PLANNING
PURPOSE:
– To obtain your interests, activities/events, and constructive feedback in creating more value to its members and the local community, as well as helping to plan future events.
– To update you on latest activities/events and Section sustainability, like the Rising Stars Conference and the State of the Pikes Peak Section (see highlights below the Agenda section)
There will be two meetings:
- A Section meeting in which all IEEE members are invited to attend (5:30 pm – 6:30 pm, see Agenda section)
- An EXCOM (Executive Committee) Meeting (6:30 pm – 7:30 pm) in which all IEEE section members (who are not part of the EXCOM committee) are invited to attend as well.
To help save time during the meeting, the Section has developed a work-in-progress and multimedia website with highlights of events during 2019-2022 period for the members to provide a snapshot of Section/Chapters activities. The highlights with weblinks can be found just below the Agenda section. There is also an attached pdf of the same highlights with weblinks.
The meeting room can only accommodate 30 people. Adjacent to the meeting room is a dining area for overflow to accommodate more than 30 people.
For those who cannot attend the meeting, you can email me at john.santiago@ieee.org or john@e-liteworks.com about your interests of topics, new services and/or other recommendations. We’ll compile and consolidate them for the meeting. If you have time, I’d suggest you review the highlights of past activities and other information that can be found in the Agenda section shown below.
A survey will also be sent out requesting feedback on planning of future activities and services. For example, using IEEE vTools (vTools stand for Volunteer Tools) as well as zoom, google meet, Microsoft Teams should the section re-activate past Section chapters that may be geographically widely dispersed? VTools Analytical Database (OU Analytics) shows the following number of section members for those with no chapters within the section.

16 February 2023: Daniel Thomson – Rising Stars Conference Report
State of the Pikes Peak Section – Dr. John Santiago
The briefing below also serves as an early-bird celebration of Engineering week!
.
Logo Description on Certificate of Appreciation.
The above diamond logo from the presentation and described below was adapted from Dr John Santiago entrepreneurial experience when creating and designing his business logos.
Using the Sierpinski Equilateral Triangle, you can also form a Pyramid (or Tetrahedral). The tetrahedral model was also used in Dr. Santiago’s dissertation of modeling and evaluating control strategies of Large-Scale Flexible Space Structures.
For most undergraduates, the logo shape looks like a diamond…implying that engineering is hard and valuable.
After graduating from an engineering school the logo may look like a Superman Shield to certain individuals … where folks assume you have superpowers as an engineer.
The eagle represents the powerful technical skillset. The three-headed eagle represents the government model by the Founding Fathers, designing a nation to unleash the entrepreneurial spirit among its citizens.
The owl represents the entrepreneurial mindset (or growth and leadership mindset) to provide career direction and motivating in keeping your technical skillset sharp.
Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN) Framework can be briefly described as:
- Skillset + Mindset = Career Success
- Tandem Bicycle is visual icon of the KEEN framework.
- Skillset is the back-seater (or eagle in this case) provides power and is like the magnitude and front-seater (or owl) provides direction.
- Both riders (skillset and mindset) provide a vector for career success
As mentioned earlier, on the logo is the three-headed eagle which also represents the model by our Founders to create a government that never was.
Our country’s Founders designed a government and provided an environment to unleash the creativity and entrepreneurial mindset of ‘WE THE PEOPLE’.
Gif image below is same as the above video, but you cannot pause…goes on continuously.
Some Ideas to Promote IEEE customized for Pikes Peak Region
Applications of the Sierpinski Triangle
The Sierpinski triangle was first discovered by the Polish mathematician Waclaw Sierpinski in 1915. He was studying the properties of a particular type of triangle and noticed that when he divided it into smaller and smaller parts, the same pattern emerged. This pattern is now known as the Sierpinski triangle. The triangle is composed of three points, each connected to the other two by a line. The triangle can be divided into four smaller triangles, each of which is an exact copy of the original. This process can be repeated infinitely, creating a fractal.
It is created by iteratively removing triangles from a larger triangle. The Sierpinski Triangle has been studied extensively in mathematics and has numerous applications in various fields. Here are some of them:
- Fractal image compression: The Sierpinski Triangle can be used in image compression algorithms to generate self-similar patterns that reduce the size of an image file without losing important details.
- Computer graphics: The Sierpinski Triangle is often used in computer graphics to create 3D models of landscapes and terrains, as well as to generate textures and patterns for surfaces.
- Number theory: The Sierpinski Triangle can be used in number theory to study the properties of prime numbers and to construct complex numbers.
- Chaos theory: The Sierpinski Triangle can be used to model chaotic systems and to study the behavior of complex systems over time.
- Education: The Sierpinski Triangle is often used in education as a visual tool to teach concepts such as self-similarity, iteration, and fractals.
- Art: The Sierpinski Triangle has been used as a design element in various forms of art, including architecture, painting, sculpture, and graphic design.
- Data visualization: The Sierpinski Triangle can be used in data visualization to display hierarchical relationships between data points.
- Cryptography: The Sierpinski Triangle can be used in cryptography to generate pseudo-random numbers and to encrypt data.

How can fractal thinking encouraged best business practices?
Fractal thinking can be used to encourage best business practices in a number of ways. Fractal thinking involves applying the principles of self-similarity and iteration to complex problems, which can help businesses to break down large problems into smaller, more manageable pieces. Here are some examples of how fractal thinking can be used to encourage best business practices:
- Developing scalable business models: Fractal thinking can help businesses develop scalable business models that can be easily replicated. By breaking down a business model into its component parts and identifying the elements that can be repeated or scaled, businesses can create a more efficient and profitable operation.
- Streamlining processes: Fractal thinking can be used to streamline business processes by breaking down complex tasks into smaller, more manageable parts. This can help businesses to identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies, and to develop more efficient processes.
- Identifying patterns and trends: Fractal thinking can help businesses to identify patterns and trends in complex data sets. By breaking down the data into smaller, more manageable parts, businesses can identify the key drivers of performance and develop strategies to capitalize on these trends.
- Encouraging innovation: Fractal thinking can encourage innovation by promoting a culture of experimentation and iteration. By breaking down complex problems into smaller pieces, businesses can test and refine their ideas before scaling them up.
- Managing risk: Fractal thinking can help businesses manage risk by breaking down complex risks into smaller, more manageable pieces. By identifying the underlying causes of risks and addressing them systematically, businesses can reduce their exposure to risk and minimize the impact of potential disruptions.
In summary, fractal thinking can be used to encourage best business practices by breaking down complex problems into smaller, more manageable pieces. By applying the principles of self-similarity and iteration to business problems, businesses can develop scalable business models, streamline processes, identify patterns and trends, encourage innovation, and manage risk more effectively.
ENGINEERING WEEK: THE Creation of the United States from an Engineering Educator Perspective
Although Engineering Week was mentioned during the meeting, there was no time to discuss in detail what is meant by the view as to creating a government that never existed before. A poster was briefly discussed during the meeting, however. Here’s one perspective to help celebrate Engineering Week.
They used a three-headed eagle coordinated through one neck to model the new government.
-
Separation of powers: The three-headed eagle is often used to symbolize the separation of powers in the U.S. government. Each of the eagle’s heads represents a different branch of government: the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. This model emphasizes the importance of checks and balances and the need for each branch to act as a counterbalance to the others, in order to prevent any one branch from becoming too powerful.
-
Federalism: Another way that the three-headed eagle model has been used is to symbolize the federal structure of the U.S. government. The central eagle represents the federal government, while the two outer eagles represent the states. This model emphasizes the importance of a strong central government, while also recognizing the rights and autonomy of the individual states.
-
National identity: Finally, the three-headed eagle is sometimes used as a symbol of American national identity. The eagle is a powerful and majestic bird that is associated with strength, freedom, and independence. By representing the U.S. government as a three-headed eagle, this model emphasizes the idea that the U.S. government is a powerful, sovereign entity that represents the collective will and values of the American people.
In many ways, the Founding Fathers can be viewed as engineers of the American political system. They applied many of the same principles and practices that are common in engineering to the design and construction of a new form of government, and their work has stood the test of time, continuing to serve as a model for democratic societies around the world.
-
Architecture: Many of the Founding Fathers were involved in designing and constructing buildings. Thomas Jefferson, for example, was an accomplished architect who designed the Virginia State Capitol and the University of Virginia, among other notable structures.
-
Military engineering: During the Revolutionary War, many of the Founding Fathers played important roles in military engineering. George Washington, for example, oversaw the construction of fortifications and other infrastructure that were essential to the success of the Continental Army.
-
Surveying: Surveying was an important field during the time of the Founding Fathers, and many of them were involved in surveying and mapping land for a variety of purposes, including property assessment and the development of transportation networks. George Washington, for example, worked as a surveyor before he became a military commander and politician.
-
Invention: Many of the Founding Fathers were also inventors and innovators, developing new technologies and machines that helped to advance industry and society. Benjamin Franklin, for example, was a prolific inventor who is credited with inventing the lightning rod, bifocal glasses, and a number of other devices.
