ASHRAE 90.1 Addendum cv | Motor efficiency standards
Statement:
Similar to an observation widely acknowledged among practicing electrical designers when federal transformer energy conservation regulations were promulgated: while placing downward pressure on motor efficiencies is a worthy goal, a large part of energy wasted originates in motor branch and feeder circuits whose design is governed by Article 22o and Article 430 of the National Electrical Code developed by the National Fire Protection Association. An organization such as NFPA. IEEE or ASHRAE should fund applications research into the prescriptive design requirements of the National Electrical Code. It may be found that power chain losses are far greater than the losses for which the motor itself is responsible.
University of Michigan Plant Engineering has confirmed that this addendum does not reduce the size of the competitive market for motors, as confirmed by the ability of many motor vendors to meet the specification, reproduced here for the convenience of our colleagues:
