2017 National Electrical Code | Perspective from CSA Group
Ark Tsisserev
Ark Tsisserev (CSA Group) and Mike Anthony (@StandardsUMich) reflect upon 20+ years of advocacy; discussing similarities and differences between NFPA 70 (the US National Electrical Code), the IEC 60364 and the Canadian Electrical Code
Mike:
Thanks for sharing this interview with me, particularly on the Canada Day.
I forgot about it completely, abut is is very nice – to revisit this subject.
As I mentioned earlier, in Canada – we are proud of the Canadian electrical safety system which is based on use of “approved” products under rules of the CE Code, Part I (e.g. products which are certified to the safety standards listed in Appendix A.1 and Appendix A.2 of the CE Code, or products which have been made approved by a field evaluation/special inspection for conformance to the CSA Model Code for the field evaluation of
electrical equipment – SPE 1000), and which is based on the regulatory enforcement (e.g. on auditing by the electrical safety regulators the fitness of electrical installation in accordance with the Code requirements and fitness of electrical products installed under the Code rules for specific condition of their use, for which such products have been “approved”).
This system creates a dynamic, comprehensive transparent and measurable interaction between:
1. the electrical safety regulators participating in the development of the CE Code, and safety standards for electrical products,
2. the product manufactures and certification organizations, and
3. electrical consultants and contractors involved in design and installations in accordance with the CE Code, Part I and involved in use of the products, which are certified to the safety standards to the CE Code, Part II (which are listed in Appendix A.1 of the Code) or to the standards developed by other SDO’s (UL; ULC; etc,, when such standards are listed in Appendix A.2 of the CE Code).
Have a wonderful 4th of July celebration and stay in touch,
Ark.
Always a privilege. Hope to see you in San Diego. Feel free to present on our new IEEE-TV Channel. You have lots of knowledge to share.
