Abstract:
Our perception of sound and light informs much of how we experience the world. We see glorious rainbows and hear the summertime chirp of crickets; we wonder about invisibility cloaks and the twinkling of distant stars. Our fascination with light and sound has informed much intellectual and scientifi c thought. The ancient Greeks noticed the interplay between overtones and musical notes; Euler and Newton thought about the very nature of light. In this talk, we look at how our quest to understand light and sound has lead to, and been infl uenced by, mathematics. We’ll also look at how mathematics unfetters our imagination and allows us to think of invisibility cloaks and neverending musical canons.
