Title:

A Field Test to Determine PSS Effectiveness At Multigenerator Power Plants

Date:

Thursday, January 13, 2010 from 2:00 pm

Location:

E3-262 EITC, Senate Chamber,University of Manitoba Fort Garry Campus

Speaker:

Dr. Nelson Martins
CEPEL, Brazil

Abstract:

Dr. Martins will be discussing a new field test that adequately assesses the oscillation damping effectiveness of the PSSs in a multi-generator power plant. The test allows estimating the location of the dominant open-loop poles from frequency response measurements of the closed-loop multivariable system. This test was first carried out at the Itaipu 60-Hz power station, which was generating 4000 MW at the time. The test validation was made through comparison of obtained frequency response measurements with computer simulations of a detailed dynamic model of the Brazilian interconnected power system.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Martins is known for his work in eigensolution algorithms and small signal stability analysis for the control of large-scale power systems. He is currently a Research Consultant and Assistant to the Director General at CEPEL, the Brazilian Electrical Energy Research Centre in Rio de Janeiro. In 1998 he was elevated to IEEE Fellow and has served as Chair on numerous committees, including the task force on Power System Restoration Dynamics from which he received the Distinguished Service Award 2010.
