Date:

Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 6:30 p.m.

Location:

Manitoba Hydro Place, 360 Portage, Winnipeg, MB

Abstract:

Manitoba Hydro Place is a ground-breaking example of energy efficiency and sustainability merging with signature architecture. The office tower, winner of the 2009 Best Tall Building in the Americas award, used an Integrated Design Process to achieve a high-quality indoor environment while reducing energy use by 65% from the Canadian Model National Energy Code for Buildings.

This presentation and tour will share lessons learned, from planning and design to construction and commissioning. The Integrated Design Process will be emphasized, specifically as it relates to energy efficiency. In addition, the paradigm shift in designing highly energy-efficient buildings will be discussed. This climatically-responsive approach has set the stage for a radical market transformation to the next generation of energy-efficient buildings.

Mark Pauls is the Building Energy Management Engineer for Manitoba Hydro Place. His current duties include systems commissioning, implementing a Measurement and Verification Plan, and optimizing the systems at Manitoba Hydro Place for maximum energy efficiency.

Cost:

Free for students, $5 for professionals

Registration:

The tour on June 17 is full. But, due to popular demand, another tour is being planned for the near future. Please contact Dawn Nedohin-Macek (nedohin-macek@ieee.org) to receive information and/or reserve a spot on the second Manitoba Hydro Building tour.

One Comment on “Manitoba Hydro Tour”

  1. Marion and I would like to thank you for fitting us in on the Manitoba Hydro building on Thursday evening.

The whole evening at the Manitoba Hydro building was EXCELLENT! We found Mark’s presentation very informative and would have enjoyed hearing more information if there was more time. The tour of the building was GREAT!

The IEEE Section Group’s ideal of sponsoring these group activities is very good and I hope that others in the IEEE organization will take advantage of the learning and sharing opportunities that is being offered.

I also found Manitoba Hydro’s tour and sharing of the building to be exceptional. I hope that you will be able to continue sharing this achievement with others.

    Thank you again.

    Perry and Marion Y.
