There are currently two cyber security standards that support Utility systems – NERC CIP and the lesser known IEC 62443 (ISA 99).  These were created to provide a framework to design, integrate and run cybersecurity defensive systems and training for substation personnel.

To complicate matters, your traditional IT engineer has no knowledge of any of the standards or any of the typical day to day operations of an electric substation. Many new IT professionals do not understand the communications protocols and specialized IP based (and non IP) equipment used in the Utility space.

We will discuss how these topics are merging within the Electric Utility (and other Industrial verticals) space.
