Date:

Wednesday, November 10, 2010 @ 6:00-7:00pm

Location:

E2-365, EITC Building, University of Manitoba Fort Garry Campus

Speaker:

Marcia Friesen, P.Eng, Ph.D.
Director – IEEQ Program
Department of Design Engineering
University of Manitoba

Abstract:

The Internationally-Educated Engineers Qualification (IEEQ) Program is a University of Manitoba program by which foreign-trained engineers (recent immigrants to Manitoba) can meet partial requirements for P.Eng. licensure in Manitoba. Students in the IEEQ Program are recent immigrants to Manitoba who already hold a completed engineering degree obtained from a university in their home country, and often have many years professional experience from their home country. Through IEEQ, these foreign-trained engineers take senior level engineering courses at the University of Manitoba to confirm their technical qualifications, and complete a co-op work term in industry in order to gain Canadian engineering experience. In addition, IEEQ maintains a strong focus on cultural orientation, individual language support, and networking opportunities. Since the program began in 2003, approximately 40 local employers have hired IEEQ students into co-op terms, and most employers have used the co-op term as an ‘extended interview’, to assess the individual’s fit for long-term employment. IEEQ also collaborates with industry by offering seminars for managers and supervisors on managing cultural diversity in the engineering workplace. This presentation will discuss the IEEQ Program’s objectives and outcomes, with particular attention to its connections to engineering industry.
