Title:

Classic HVDC AC Filter Design Studies

Date:

Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at 12:00 noon.

Location:

Holiday Inn South, 1330 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg

Speaker:

Siavash Zoroofi and Nicole Denboer

Abstract:

The filter arrangements on the ac side of an HVDC converter have two main duties:

  • To absorb harmonic currents generated by the converter and thus to reduce the impact of the harmonics on the connected ac system, like ac voltage distortion and telephone interference
  • To supply reactive power for compensating the demand of the converter station

To meet the duty requirements above, a set of design criteria need to be considered. Design studies including network harmonic impedance, performance and rating calculations are explained.

Speaker Bio:

Siavash Zoroofi holds a Masters degree in Electric Power Engineering from Chalmers University in Sweden. He has been involved in numerous HVDC studies including filter design studies for HVDC and SVC systems, power quality studies, test and commission of high power converters and variable speed drives. He is currently working for TransGrid Solutions as a power system specialist.

Nicole Denboer received her B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Manitoba in 2011. She is currently a power system specialist with TransGrid Solutions. Her work experience includes power system planning studies in HVDC and HVAC integrations using PSS/E and PSCAD software packages. She has been involved in studies including harmonic impedance calculations and ac filter design studies for HVDC and SVC systems, and series capacitor MOV sizing.
