Title:

New Developments at RTDS Technologies

Date:

Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 12:00 noon.

Location:

Holiday Inn South, 1330 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg

Speaker:

Ming Yu,Ph.D., P.Eng.

Abstract:

RTDS Technologies Inc. is the world leader in real time digital simulation for the power industry. As part of its mandate, RTDS Technologies is responsible for developments of new simulation hardware and software to meet the changing technologies being introduced in today’s modern power systems.

New developments in hardware and simulation models will be presented and discussed.

A new generation of processing card – the PB5 has been developed with increased computational power, enhanced inter-card communication (to simulate larger, more complex networks) and support for multiple small time step networks.

PMU models and the GTSYNC card have been developed to facilitate simulation and study of wide area protection and control strategies.

The GTNET card has been developed to interface a number of network communication protocols with the RTDS simulator.

Various new models have been developed to simulate new equipments in power systems:

  • Modular Multi-Level Converter (MMC)
  • Capacitor Commutated Converter
  • Frequency dependent PI section model for small time step
  • Embedded electrical machine model
  • Renewable energy models

Speaker Bio:

Ming Yu, Ph.D., P.Eng., received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China in 1982 and 1984 respectively. From 1984 to early 1989 he was a lecturer with Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada in 1994. He joined RTDS Technologies Inc. in 1994 and is currently Manager of Power System Software Development. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Manitoba.

His research interests include parallel algorithms and the real time simulation of electromagnetic and electromechanical transients in power systems.
