Abstract

The continuing medical education (ECM) course “Fetal and perinatal medicine, from a clinical and technological perspective” will be held in the framework of the International Summer School on Technologies and Signal Processing in Perinatal Medicine (site.ieee.org/tsppm-2018/), funded by Sardegna Ricerche with the contribution of the Regione Autonoma della Sardegna.
Three lectures by a gynecologist, a neonatologist and a pediatric cardiologist will be proposed. The aim is that of presenting the aspects related to the diagnosis and follow-up of the fetus during pregnancy, identifying risk conditions due to intrauterine growth restriction and fetal cardiovascular diseases. In both case, ultrasounds represent the reference technology for the diagnosis. Prediction markers of abnormal fetal development can be inferred from the ultrasound images of the fetus and of specific body structures, including the thickness of major vessels, whereas cardiotocography can be exploited to obtain other markers associated to the heart rate variability. At the same time, echocardiography is the primary method for diagnosing fetal cardiovascular disease and for monitoring progression and managing the disease process and, thanks to the current technologies, can be easily performed from remote, as will be demonstrated through a live demo. The neonatologist’s perspective is fundamental in presenting the effects of prenatal diagnosis on relevant neonatal pathologies, such as prematurity, perinatal asphyxia, infections and sepsis. Special attention will be given to highlight the outstanding role of early epigenetic mechanisms and the future adult life of each individual.
From a technological perspective, several key aspects essential for impactful research and development in healthcare, including value proposition creation, IP generation, and co-creation, will be presented. A dive deeper into the current trends, challenges, and needs observed in the Perinatal Care domain will be also presented.
Being part of an international scientific school, the official language of the ECM course is English.
This ECM event, which is offered free of charge, represents an interesting opportunity for physicians of different specialties, nurses, obstetricians and technical professionals.
