Abstract:

Power Amplifier designers have relied on 2-tone nonlinear Harmonic Balance simulations to characterize nonlinear performance and estimate things like EVM and ACPR. This technique is insufficient for high PAPR modulation schemes used in today’s wireless standards such as 5GNR. Specification-compliant simulations using modulated signals are an alternative.  However, with the complex modulation schemes and bandwidth requirements of 5G signals, a single modulated signal simulation may require more than 1 million time points.  This makes it impractical for designers to validate or investigate performance while covering the entire design space such as varying bias, temperate, design parameters, signal payload configurations, etc.

In this presentation we discuss the latest techniques for speeding up these modulated-signal simulations of power amplifiers and complete transmitter systems.  The techniques provide accurate results in a fraction of the time allowing designers to do more complete design exploration for better confidence and circuit design.  The proposed techniques work in both of the most commonly used CAD tools, Keysight ADS (mostly for GaAs & GaN) and Cadence Virtuoso (mostly for CMOS & SiGe).
