IEEE WEBINAR: DC TRACTION POWER SUBSTATION DESIGN

September 21, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Abstract

Most mass transit rail systems operate using high power DC sources to power the operating trains carrying passengers. The DC power is supplied by what are called DC Traction Power Substations (TPSS). These specialised substations have the necessary equipment to safely and reliably convert incoming AC power into outgoing DC power to feed the rail system. This webinar discusses the basic power equipment elements, applicable industry standards as well as industry practices applied to DC Traction Power Substations found across North America with a focus on Light Rail DC Traction Power Substations. This topic is interesting as it provides a basic understanding of the design behind the DC power supply for Light rail trains as more projects are being design and built in Canada and around the world.
