WEBINAR: SOLVING DRIVE INPUT POWER QUALITY ISSUES FOR OIL AND GAS INDUSTRIES

Summary

The webinar will introduce the basic principles of input power quality issues related to VSDs with various topologies utilized in LV and MV VSD’s designs commonly used in the oil field industry.  The input power quality issues (system side power quality) will be investigated: line-side voltage & current harmonics, voltage input range and regulation, voltage disturbance (transients, sags, swells, interruptions), voltage waveform notching.  Special attention will be given to system grounding methods and equipment grounding.  The presentation also considers the impact of the VSD on increased generator loading, reduced power factor, and overheating of cables and transformers. Present day solutions based on input filtering will be described.  It will be shown these input power quality issues will increase equipment failure, or at least tripping of equipment, as well as increasing operating costs. The webinar will include filter design techniques reviewing various input drive harmonic mitigation solutions such as line reactors (chokes), phase-shifting drive transformers, and drive input filters (passive or active).  A variety of real-world examples will be shared to illustrate these concepts, symptoms and solutions.

Presenters:

Thomas Dionise, P.E., Fellow Member, IEEE of Eaton Corporation

Biography: Thomas J. Dionise, PE, (S’79-M’82-F’19) B.S.E.E. degree from The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, in 1982, and the M.S.E.E. degree with the Power Option from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, in 1984. He is currently an Advisory Engineer in the Power System Engineering Department, Eaton Corporation, Warrendale. He has over 39 years of power system experience involving analytical studies and power quality investigations of industrial and commercial power systems. In the metals industry, he has specialized in power quality investigations, harmonic analysis and harmonic filter design for electric arc furnaces, rectifiers and VSD applications. He has co-authored 40 papers, several of which received IAS Transactions, Magazine and conference Prize Paper Awards. Mr. Dionise is the past Chair of the IEEE Metal Industry Committee and member of the Generator Grounding Working Group. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania.

Tamer Abdelazim Mellik, Ph.D., P.Eng., SMIEEE of Eaton Corporation

Biography: Tamer Abdelazim Mellik, P.Eng., Ph.D., (S’02-M’06-SM’14) received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Calgary in 2005. He has over 25 years of power system experience involving modeling, simulation, and R&D/algorithm design of 400 industrial and utility power systems. He has co-authored 40 papers in international journals and conferences and is the recipient of several awards, including the 2019 IEEE Southern Alberta PES/IAS Chapter Outstanding Engineer award, the 2018 IEEE IAS PCIC 2nd Best Paper award, and the 2005 University of Calgary ENEL Best Teaching Assistant award. He is currently ranked the 2nd on the PSCAD Q&A official forum, and he was the IEEE I&CPS 2019 conference technical chair. His countries of work experience include the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, Brazil, the Netherlands, Japan, Egypt, Puerto Rico, Kuwait, Qatar, and United Arab Emirates. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the provinces of Alberta and Manitoba. He is interested in power quality solutions, electromagnetic transients and power system transient analysis, and renewable energy studies.

David Shipp, P.E., Life Fellow Member, IEEE

Biography: David D. Shipp, PE, (IEEE – S’72-M’72-SM’92-F’02-Life F’14 / SPE M’95) received the B.S.E.E. degree from The Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon, USA in 1972. He retired from Eaton Corporation’s Electrical Services and Systems where he was a Fellow Engineer and prior to that, spent 26 years with Westinghouse doing similar responsibilities.  He presently is a consulting engineer with his company Capstone Power Systems Engineering and a Life Fellow Engineer in the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He has spent many years performing the engineering work associated with his present-day capabilities, which include a wide range of services covering consulting, design, power quality, Sine wave filter designs, arc flash, grounding, switching transients and power systems analysis topics. He has written over 90 technical papers on power system analysis topics including 12 for the Society of Petroleum Engineers.  Approximately 25 technical papers have been published in IEEE/IAS international magazines and two in EC&M.  Several papers have been awarded prize paper designations.  Mr. Shipp is currently a key member of the IEEE I&CPS-sponsored Working Group on generator grounding.  He is very active in IEEE at the national level and helps write the IEEE Color Book series standards. He has spent 28+ years working with the oil and Gas industry solving ESP electrical problems involving life extension / extending ESP run times.  He takes solutions learned from other industries and works with the ESP industry to retrofit these solutions into their unique environment.  He has been awarded 2 Meritorious Awards for Engineering Innovation in the Oil and Gas industry from Hart’s E&P Magazine.  He occasionally serves as a legal expert witness.
