IEEE GREECE SECTION HOSTS A SESSION WITHIN THE IEEE R8 VIRTUAL STUDENT AND YOUNG PROFESSIONAL CONGRESS

The IEEE Greece Section organized and hosted a session within the IEEE R8 Virtual Student and Young Professional Congress on September 16th at 16:00 CEST. The lecture was on the topic of ‘Integrated Lab-on-Chip biomedical diagnostic chips: the SARS-CoV-2 example and beyond’ and given by Dr Despina Moschou.

Abstract: Lab-on-Chip technology aspires to shrink biomedical laboratories in few cm microchips, in a technological revolution step analogous to the introduction of computer technology in the 20th century. In this presentation Dr Moschou will provide an overview of this technology and its impact on healthcare, discussing its potential role in managing the COVID-19 outbreak and clinical case beyond that. She will also focus on manufacturing techniques for integrated Lab-on-Chip biomedical diagnostic chips and in particular the Lab-on-PCB technology that has been the forefront of her work for the past 8 years, providing examples of collaborative projects under way in various countries and settings.

Presenter: Dr. Despina Moschou (MEng: ECE NTUA, PhD: NCSR Demokritos, IEEE: Senior Member) is currently a Royal Academy of Engineering Industrial Fellow and Assistant Professor in BioMicroElectroMechanical Systems (BioMEMs), within the Centre for Biosensors, Bioelectronics and Biodevices (C3Bio), Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering at the University of Bath . Since 2010, her main research focus has been to apply her microfabrication and microelectronic device expertise in the development of disposable Lab-On-a-Chip systems for bioanalytical applications (molecular and immunoassay-based Point-of-Care diagnostic devices). For the past 8 years she has been pioneering globally the Lab-on-Printed Circuit Board approach, in an effort to realize disposable, mass-manufacturable Lab-on-Chip microsystems, engaging with stakeholders across all related disciplines (clinical scientists, microbiologists, chemists, manufacturers, engineers, diagnostic industries).

The IEEE R8 Virtual Student and Young Professional Congress took place online, 14 – 26 September, 18:00 – 21:00. It featured a series of plenary sessions, workshops, competitions, social activities, and many more – through separate Student, Young Professional and Women in Engineering tracks. Each day was hosted by a different Section from Region 8, with local content presented online across our region!

Soft Skills Workshop

About this event

The IEEE Greece Section, in collaboration with the IEEE Young Professionals Greece, the Women in Engineering Greece, and the IEEE National Technical University of Athens Student Branch organized an online Soft Skills Workshop on Thursday 30/4/20 at 18:30.

Soft skills vs Hard skills
What are the soft skills that employers seek today? Do you know what VUCA is? Why are these skills important especially in the after COVID19 era? Are we born with them or we can learn them? How can you maximize your chances to succeed in your career? In this 90’ presentation you will find out which are the basic “soft skills” and then we will focus on 4 of them that can differentiate you in the work environment: Understanding and managing change, resilience, teamwork, leadership. You will understand their meaning and content and you will learn about the value that each of them has for you as an individual but also within an organization. We will discuss cases where one can demonstrate these skills and how you can practice them along your career journey.

Marianna Terzidaki is an independent career coach. She studied Electrical Engineering at NTUA and got an MSc in Operational Research from the University of Birmingham. She has worked in Consulting, Telecom and IT in the areas of Project Management, Marketing and Customer Experience. The last 16 years she worked for Vodafone leading big interdepartmental projects, developing innovative roaming services, contracting with more than 200 Mobile Operators worldwide and digitizing billing experience. But within the corporate environment, it was interacting with people and managing teams that excited her and triggered her to make a career shift. She decided to combine learning new skills with her wish to work with people and for the people. Now she is a certified career coach, inspired by supporting young professionals to set and achieve their goals, grow and build a successful career.

Young Professionals Networking Event @ ICIP2018

During the flagship conference of the Signal Processing Society, ICIP2018, a Young Professionals Networking Event was organized. This panel discussion and networking brought together early career engineers and scientists as well as senior graduate students for an opportunity to network with peers and meet with industry leaders. The panelists shared their career stories and experiences and talked about their motivations and the paths that the led them to where they are now.

Info stand @ SETN2018

The Hellenic Conference on Artificial Intelligence is organized biannually by the Hellenic Artificial Intelligence Society (EETN). It has already been established as one of the most prominent forums for Greek and International AI scientists to present original and high-quality research on emergent topics of Artificial Intelligence. SETN 2018 was hosted in Patras from July 9th till 12th and attracted Greek and international participation.

IEEE Young Professionals of the Greek Section participated in the conference and had an info stand, where flyers were given to raise awareness on IEEE and the Young Professionals.

HSYP2017

The HSYP ( Hellenic Student and Young Professionals) Congress is the meeting of all the IEEE Student Branches of Greece and Cyprus and one of the most important initiatives of the IEEE Greece Section. During the Congress , which takes place in one of the cities of Greece or Cyprus, all the Student Branches present their activities. The participants meet each other, share innovative ideas and gather experience and memories. The Congress’ impact is of great importance for the IEEE organization’s further development.

The HSYP 2017 was hosted in Athens from November 3rd till 5th and was co-organized by the NTUA student branch and the Young Professionals of the Greece Section. It was an excellent opportunity for Student Members & Young Professionals from Greece and Cyprus to get together, exchange knowledge, build relationships, share ideas and have a great time. During the event the student members were introduced to the Young Professionals and already several graduating students expressed their interest to make the transition to the YP.

The program of the event included the presentation of various IEEE activities and initiatives, as well as technical and soft-skills workshops. During the breaks, the Young Professional booth was visited by several student members asking about the YP activities and events.

The event was very successful in terms of participation. A total number of 61 of IEEE members from all over Greece and Cyprus took part, with 20% of them being recent graduates or close to graduation. There were also officers from Greece Section and Region 8, presenting IEEE activities and external speakers from industry giving workshops.

Feedback collected from the participants:

Bright minds were gathered at the congress.People that enlightened me and understood my view about life truly. I networked at a major level with the vast majority of them and I look forward to be a part of HSYP 2019!

Three amazing days meeting and bonding with new people, making new friends and discovering more about the community that is IEEE,it’s like family. I spent three days doing what I love with people that share the same passion about advancing technology for humanity. It was an IEEEXperience of a lifetime.

Overall it was a great experience for exploring our capabilities and meeting new people with similar interests. The workshops were nice and creative as much as the presentations. I hope to stay in touch at least with some of you cause we were a great group of young people.
