“VIBRATION EFFECTS ON ELECTRONIC CIRCUITRY”

Abstract: The phrase “solid state” has brought many in the profession to think that digital electronic circuits are free from being affected by mechanical events around their circuitry.  This discussion shows from a practical approach how shock and vibration can affect the function of electronic circuits, how this effect gets propagated from mechanical shock or vibration into the operation of a solid state circuit, and what design techniques can be used to mitigate or eliminate disruptions to functionality.

Dan Bezzant is an electrical engineer at RTX(Raytheon) in Goleta California, where he works on electronic warfare systems.  Dan has been in the electronics industry since 1983 when he started out doing bit-slice processors for Memorex as well as some of the early ASIC development work.  Dan has been extensively involved in FPGA design since their inception in the 80’s.  Dan’s technology focus areas have been high speed serial communication buses such as Ethernet, Fiber Channel, SAS, SATA; video logic, and other now historical interfaces such as IEEE 1394 Firewire.  Dan is named on 13 patents in video circuitry, digital logic, and radar systems.  Dan received a Masters in Engineering Management from Santa Clara University, known for notable alumni such as Max Baer — Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillies, and perhaps a less recognizable name — Gavin Newsom.  Dan received his BSEE from Brigham Young University.  Dan and his wife Susan live on the Mesa in Santa Barbara by their daughter and 4 of their grandchildren.  Dan’s hobbies consist of sailing, which he doesn’t get to do much these days, and a new endeavor designing doorbells.
