Abstract:
Single Wire Earth Return (SWER) distribution systems have been throughout the world as a low cost electrification alternative. In Manitoba, approximately 7000 kilometers of SWER line is in active service. The technology utilizes a single phase conductor to deliver energy to customers and relies on the earth to provide the return path back to the source. This presentation will overview the history of this technology and discusses the implementation of a SWER system in rural Mongolia. Technical issues which be discussed include distribution system planning, protection, and grounding.
Speaker Bio:
Jared obtained his BSc(EE) degree in 1999 from the University of Manitoba. He joined Manitoba Hydro as an Engineer in Training in 1999 and worked in the Distribution Standards and Distribution Engineering Departments before becoming Section Head of the Distribution Performance Engineering Section in 2007. As Section Head he oversees a multi-disciplinary group responsible for distribution system reliability performance analysis, distribution system transient analysis, power quality, distributed resource interconnections, and gas pipeline integrity.
Jared has 12 years of distribution engineering experience including work on Manitoba Hydro International projects in Mongolia and Tanzania. His areas of interest include distribution system planning and transient analysis, distribution system grounding, and performance analysis. He can be contacted at jwaddell@hydro.mb.ca.
