Technical Meeting – June 2014
Title:
Understanding sub-synchronous interactions in wind integrated power systems
Date:
12:00 Noon, Tuesday, June 17, 2014
Location:
Holiday Inn South, 1330 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg
Speaker:
Hiranya Suriyaarachchi
Abstract:
Reported recent incidents have prompted an interest in studying sub-synchronous interactions (SSI) in wind integrated power systems. Type 3 wind power plants are most vulnerable to produce SSI with series capacitors. A clear understanding of these interactions is essential in designing SSI mitigation methods. There is no clear method available in literature to study SSI wind integrated power systems. Various techniques adopted at different stated of studies has led to different conclusions about the cause of the SSI between type 3 wind power plants and series capacitors. In this presentation a procedure to study SSI in wind integrated power systems will be presented. The cause for SSI between Type 3 wind power plants and series capacitors is identified using the proposed procedure.
Speaker Bio:
Hiranya Suriyaarachchi received the B.Sc. in Engineering degree from University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka and the M.Sc. degree from University of Manitoba in 2003 and 2008, respectively. Recently, he successfully defended his PhD thesis at the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Manitoba. After receiving the bachelor’s degree, Hiranya was with University of Moratuwa working as a lecturer. Since 2010, he was with TransGrid Solutions Inc. working as a power system studies specialist. Hiranya is a member of the CIGRE working group B4.62 “Connection of wind farms to weak ac systems”. His research interests are in the areas of power system stability and control, wind integration and HVDC transmission.
