Abstract:

The Bipole III (BPIII) Transmission project is required to enhance the reliability of Manitoba’s electrical system. At the ends of the new 500kV DC line will be the northern Keewatinoow and southern Riel Converter Stations.

This presentation will provide an overview and a status update on the BPIII Transmission project with a focus on the construction of the converter stations. This will include a discussion of the corresponding challenges from a project management perspective including northern construction, worldwide HVdc market conditions and LCC/VSC technology options.

Speaker Bio:

Kerry Walker, P. Eng C.E.T., holds a Bachelor of Engineering Degree (First Class Standing) from Lakehead University (2001) and a Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from Red River College (1997). He began his career with Manitoba Hydro in 1997 as a Power Electrician Trainee and has worked outside Manitoba Hydro for both Schlumberger and Siemens. His HVdc experience includes HVDC Design, Maintenance & Performance and NERC positions and he was the Operations and Maintenance Manager of the Neptune RTS 660MW HVdc link between New York and New Jersey. He is currently the Project Engineer for the Converter Station Construction Department on the BPIII HVdc project and a member of the Cigre WG B4-60 on designing HVdc grids for optimal reliability and availability performance.
