Title:

Manitoba Hydro Riel Sectionalization Project: A Project Management Perspective

Date:

Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 12:00 noon.

Location:

Holiday Inn South, 1330 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg

Speaker:

Janet Wheatley, P.Eng.

Abstract:

The Riel Reliability Improvement Initiative Project (Riel Sectionalization) involves the sectionalization of the existing Dorsey to Forbes (Minnesota) Stations 500 kilovolt (kV) international transmission line. The project includes site reparation, installation of 500/230 kV transformers and switching facilities, building new 230kV and 500kV AC terminal stations to re-terminate the 500kV export line and sectionalize the existing Ridgeway to St. Vital Stations double circuit 230 kV transmission lines, as well as development of a variety of associated station equipment and infrastructure. The requirement for the Riel Sectionalization was identified during the course of Manitoba Hydro system planning reliability studies. This presentation will focus on the design, coordination and construction challenges encountered to date and potential future hurdles to overcome from a project management perspective.

Speaker Bio:

Janet obtained her BSc (Comp Eng) degree in 2006 from the University of Manitoba. During her degree she worked as a summer student at Manitoba Hydro and continued on as an Engineer in Training in 2006 upon graduation. Janet worked in the HVDC System and Controls Department until January 2010 when she became a Project Engineer for the Riel Sectionalization Project in the Transmission Projects Department. As Project Engineer, her primary roles are to monitor project participants to ensure budget, schedule and scope of work are being met, act as a liaison between both internal and external stakeholders and to assess ongoing work and immediate challenges to allocate work and resources effectively. She is also completing her MSc in Electrical Engineering part time.
In her spare time, she instructs group exercise classes at GoodLife Fitness and is an active volunteer in both the engineering and non-engineering community. She can be contacted at jwheatley@hydro.mb.ca.
