Cybersecurity in the 3D Era of Power Systems: Load Altering Attacks Unleashed!

Charalambos (Harrys) Konstantinou
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology,
Saudi Arabia

4 pm, Friday, March 28, 2025
CAPS Seminar Room 120

The electric grid is the backbone of our society and economy. It powers our homes, businesses, and transportation systems. With technological advances and the increasing use of renewables, the 3D era of power systems is facing new challenges. In this talk, we will discuss how such challenges drive power grid evolution and how the temporal fluctuations of renewable sources impact the grid’s vulnerability to load-altering attacks able to coordinate fleets of high-wattage Internet- of-Things (IoT)-based controllable loads. We will also provide methods for addressing these threats to ensure the grid remains (cyber)secure and (cyber)resilient.

<Biography>
Charalambos (Harrys) Konstantinou is currently an Assistant Professor in the Computer, Electrical, and Mathematical Science and Engineering Division at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia. He is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Secure Next Generation Resilient Systems Laboratory (SENTRY Lab). He received an M.Eng. degree in ECE from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from New York University, NY, USA. Before joining KAUST, he was an Assistant Professor with the Center for Advanced Power Systems at Florida State University. His research interests include critical infrastructure security and resilience, focusing on smart grid technologies, renewable energy integration, and real-time simulation.
