Seminar entitled “Some Aspects on Invention of Blue Light Emitting Diode (LED) for the Award of Nobel Prize-2014 in Physics” was organized in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering on 26th february 2020.

In the seminar Dr. Md. Rezaul Huque Khan Sir discussed about the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources.

This was indeed an interesting and timely achieved phenomenon of common interest to Physicists, Electrical Engineers and Material Science experts. Red and green diodes had been around for a long time, but without any blue light white lamps could not be created. Despite considerable efforts both in the scientific community and industry, blue LED had remained a challenge for the last three decades. In his talk a brief conceptual picture of semiconductors and optoelectronic devices using compound semiconductors was analyzed. A brief history of the initial attempt and success of research relating to blue LED was discussed. In his seminar Dr. Khan described the present scenario of success and possibility of future applications of efficient blue LED.

Professor Dr. Md. Rezaul Huque Khan received the B.Sc. Engineering degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from BUET in 1972. He received the M.Eng. degree from Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan in 1984, and the D. Eng. degree from Nagoya University, Japan in 1987 under the supervision of Professor Isamu Akasaki, the Nobel Prize-2014 winner in Physics. He worked at CUET as faculty from 1973-1980 and later joined the Department of Physics, University of Chittagong in 1990. He later moved to the Department of Applied Physics and Electronics (at present Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering) in 2002, where Prof. Khan was one of the two founding members of the department. In the past. Prof. Khan worked in Toyota Central research lab in 1987-1988 and in Nagoya University as a visiting professor from 1995-1996. He served as the Dean and Professor of School of Science and Engineering in Chittagong Independent University from Jan 2017-Jan 2020. He is a life Fellow of IEB, member of IEEE, life member of BPS and member of BAAS.
