DEREGULATION OF ELECTRICITY MARKETS: STATE OF THE ART AND MAIN CHALLENGES

Abstract: this presentation will discuss the state of the art of the deregulation of electricity markets and the main challenging s looking forward in face of the penetration of renewables, including the need to adapt current market designs as well as to to develop new power planning techniques to cope with renewable integration, be in interconnected or islands power systems.
About the presenter : Luiz Barroso is the CEO of PSR Energy Consulting and Analytics. He was the head of the Brazilian Energy Planning Agency and a visitor in the International Energy Agency. He has over 20 years of experience in power-gas systems planning, economics, operation, risk management, and market design in about 30 countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia. He is also a research affiliate of Comillas Pontifical University’s Institute for Research in Technology (IIT), a lecturer in the Florence School of Regulation. He is an IEEE Fellow, for his analytical contributions on power system economics and regulation and was the recipient of the 2010 IEEE PES Outstanding Young Engineer Award. He graduated in mathematics and received in 2006 the Ph.D. degree in operations research from COPPE/UFRJ, Brazil.
