In Memoriam: Dr. Mojgan Daneshmand (Co-Chair) and Dr. Pedram Mousavi (Vice-Chair)
The nation is united in grief over the tragedy of the Ukraine International Airlines disaster on January 8, 2020. Our University, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and our small community of researchers in the Electromagnetics Group are gutted by the loss of so many of our own, including our dearest colleagues, Dr. Mojgan Daneshmand and Dr. Pedram Mousavi, and their two daughters. For those of us who worked and interacted closely with them, it will take time to come to terms with the senseless loss of two brilliant minds, but also kind-hearted friends. They were loving, generous, compassionate, and cheerful, comforting, and hopeful. As academics, they embodied qualities that the rest of us continue to aspire to: they were highly competent, well-respected in our field, and they developed a close-knit group of graduate students and alumni that they loved, and who loved them, as their own family. Dr. Daneshmand was the co-founder of the IEEE Northern Canada Section’s joint chapter of the AP-S and MTT-S societies, and was personally invested in the cause of creating awareness and interest in AP and MTT activities on the U of A Campus. That our Chapter won the MTT-S Outstanding Chapter Award not once, but twice, was a great source of pride for her. Dr. Mousavi was ever-ready to contribute his time, resources, and large network of contacts towards improving our Chapter activities and was installed as Vice-Chair of the Chapter only days before the tragedy occurred. Moving forward, the mission of the Chapter and its Officers will be to carry on Dr. Daneshmand’s and Dr. Mousavi’s legacies of service to the AP-S and MTT-S. May their souls rest in peace.
