Abstract – “GPS Based Precision Time and Frequency”
GPS receivers for navigation have become ubiquitous. They are even built into most, if not all, smart phones. However, the GPS satellites can be used for more than navigation. They can provide a very precise seconds tick and using those it is possible to build a system that provides both a very accurate time and frequency reference for a very reasonable cost. The presentation will cover:
- The Time-Nuts
- The History of GPS
- The new GNSS systems
- How GPS works
- Precision GPS Timing and Timing Systems
- GPS Disciplined Oscillators (GPSDOs) for timing and frequency
- Examples of GPSDOs; Building a GPSDO
- The future of timing and a possible redefinition of the second
With worldwide precision timing for scientific and financial purposes becoming more important every day, GPS timing is more important than ever. Recently a new undersea fiber optic cable was laid to cut a few milliseconds off of the communications time between London and New York for financial trading. Highly accurate timing is essential for such purposes. A GPSDO and a portable Time & Frequency Standard will also be available to set your watch!
Biography
Francis Grosz is a native of New Orleans, graduating from Warren Easton Senior High School. He received B.S. degrees in Physics and in Engineering Sciences and an M.S. in Engineering from (LS)UNO. He also holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from The University of Illinois. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Louisiana and holds an FCC General Radiotelephone License with Ship Radar Endorsement and Amateur Extra License K5FBG. He has two U.S. Patents.
At LSUNO he was a member of the student staff of the Computer Research Center. Between degrees and while in graduate school he was a Broadcast Engineer for WWL-AM/FM/TV. After graduation he was a Senior/Principal Engineer and Engineering Specialist for Litton Data Systems, a Senior Engineer at the Naval Research Laboratory, and a principal and Electrical Engineer/Physicist with Omni Technologies. He was also an Assistant Professor at UNO and an Adjunct Professor at both UNO and Tulane. He is currently retired from gainful employment.
He has served on two NCEES Committees. He is a Life Senior member of IEEE and Eta Kappa Nu and has been an active IEEE volunteer for over 35 years. He has served on a number of conference committees, including serving as Technical Program Co-Chair of two major IEEE Conferences. He has served in most Section offices, been a member of the Region Executive Committee for 20 years, been Region 5 Director (2016-17) and IEEE Director and Vice-President for Member & Geographic Activities (2019). He is currently the Past Vice-President for MGA.
