A two-day workshop on “Remote Sensing and Their Applications” organized by the IEEE GRSS Kolkata Chapter in collaboration with the IEEE BBSR WIE AG and Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed to be University, concluded on June 3, 2023. The workshop aimed to explore the various facets of remote sensing and its practical applications in today’s world.

The event witnessed the presence of eminent speakers, including Prof. Barun Raychoudhary from Presidency University, Kolkata, Prof. U. C. Mohanty, a distinguished Professor at the Centre for Climate and Smart Agriculture at SOA Deemed to be University, Prof. Avik Bhattacharya from the Centre of Studies and Resources Engineering at IIT Bombay, and Prof. Debadatta Swain from the School of Earth Ocean and Climate Sciences at IIT Bhubaneswar. Their expertise and knowledge added immense value to the discussions and presentations throughout the workshop.

The first day of the workshop focused on topics such as remote sensing image spectroscopy and its applications, as well as remote sensing and GIS applications for sustainable Earth observations. The second day featured sessions on the application of Remote Sensing in predicting high-impact extreme weather events over India, as well as radar remote sensing and its applications. The workshop also included engaging hands-on sessions led by Prof. Debdatta Swain in collaboration with the School of Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom, on the first day. On the second day, Prof. Avik Bhattacharya conducted another interactive hands on session.

Nearly 40 participants, including faculty members, research scholars, postgraduates, and undergraduates, attended the workshop. The diverse backgrounds of the participants fostered vibrant discussions and a rich exchange of ideas. Prof. P. K. Nanda, the former Chair of the IEEE GRSS Kolkata Chapter and Vice Chancellor of SOA Deemed to be University, served as the convener of the workshop, while Dr. Tripti Swarnkar, Chair of the IEEE Bhubaneswar Women in Engineering Affinity Group and a Professor at ITER, SOA Deemed to be University, acted as the co-convener. The workshop also had the honor of hosting Dr. Sarat Chandra Sahoo, former director of IMD Bhubaneswar and current director of the Centre for Environment and Climate at SOA Deemed to be University, as a special invitee.

The experts also took the opportunity to discuss the recent train accident in Odisha, which occurred on June 2, emphasizing the potential applications of remote sensing technologies in such incidents. Overall, the workshop proved to be a grand success, achieving its objective of fostering knowledge exchange, exploring applications of remote sensing, and promoting interdisciplinary collaborations. The participants left with a deeper understanding of remote sensing and its significant role in addressing real-world challenges. The IEEE GRSS Kolkata Chapter, the IEEE BBSR Women in Engineering affinity group, and Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed to be University deserve commendation for organizing this enriching workshop, which undoubtedly made a lasting impact on all those in attendance.
