IDC Loses One of Its Most Honored Members, Em. Prof. Tom Lipo
To: All Friends and Colleagues of Em. Prof. Tom Lipo
I am writing to announce the sad news that Emeritus Prof. Tom Lipo passed away on Friday, May 8, at approx. 8:15 am in his home with his two daughters present. As you know from my last message, Tom’s health has been declining for the past several months since last summer and took a steep turn for the worse a week before he left us. He was a giant in our field of electrical machines, power electronics, and drives who, together with Em. Prof. Don Novotny, built WEMPEC into a highly successful university-industry consortium that it remains today. We will all miss him dearly.
Tom’s family plans to hold a private service for him during the coming days, with a more public memorial service next fall, provided that conditions will allow larger public gatherings by that time. We will keep you informed about these plans to commemorate Tom and his remarkable career filled with groundbreaking technical contributions to our field.
If you would like to share an expression of sympathy or tribute with Dr. Lipo’s family and his many international colleagues and friends, we recommend that you use Caring Bridge (https://www.caringbridge.org) where there is a profile in the name of “Tom Lipo”. I would like to thank all of you on behalf of Tom’s family who sent cards and letters after receiving my last message. His daughter told me that she read several of them to him every day and he greatly enjoyed hearing from you. It really brightened his spirits during the final days of his life.
T.M. Jahns, WEMPEC Director
