Fort Worth IEEE PES members, we will have our next IEEE PES meeting on January 17th from 11:30am to 1:00pm. We have Sudarshan Byreddy from Burns & McDonnell presenting on how space weather can impact our power grid.

Title:

Is the power grid for the next “space weather” event?

Abstract:

This presentation highlights the effects of Geomagnetic disturbances (GMD) on Power Grids. GMD is caused by ejection of plasma from the sun, due to coronal mass ejections (CME) and highspeed solar wind streams and its interaction with earth’s magnetic field. GMDs create low frequency GIC (Geomagnetic Induced Currents) which circulates between the transmission lines and high-side Y-grounded transformers and ground. GIC flows in Y-grounded transformers may cause Asymmetrical saturation of transformer core and damage through over-heating. The other effect is distortion of fundamental frequency which results in increased Var loading and harmonics. This reduces reliability and moves the system closer to voltage collapse. This presentation will discuss some mitigation measures and FERC & NERC regulations.

Bio:

Sudarshan received his MS degree from University of Missouri Kansas City in 2015. He is working as a Staff Electrical Engineer with 7 years of experience in Substation and Protection & Control Design at Burns & McDonnell. Sudarshan is also a licensed Professional Engineer registered with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers(TBPE). He is the vice chair for the IEEE PSRC I-46 working group. He is actively contributing in revising IEEE standards C37.101 guide for generator ground protection, C37.243 guide for the application of digital line current differential protection using digital communications, and C57.13.3 guide for grounding instrument transformer secondary circuits.

Megan Harju of Burns & McDonnell

Biography:

Megan works in the Transportation Electrification group at Burns & McDonnell designing charging infrastructure for Electric Vehicles. In her role, she develops new client relationships with utilities and commercial fleet clients looking to transition to zero-emission vehicles. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2019 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. Although her one rule when she graduated was that she wouldn’t move to Texas (Boomer Sooner!), she is thrilled to be visiting the IEEE chapter in Fort Worth to share about the importance of charging infrastructure as more and more EVs begin to hit the market.

IEEE PES FORT WORTH MONTHLY MEETING – NOVEMBER 9TH, 2021

Fort Worth IEEE PES members, we will have our next IEEE PES virtual meeting on November 9th from 11:30am to 1:00pm. We have Dr. Mahesh Morjaria from Terabase Energy Inc, speaking on the IEEE Standard for Utility-Scale Solar, Storage, and Wind Plants. Please attend if you can!

IEEE Standard for Utility-Scale Solar, Storage and Wind Plants

An overview of the IEEE P2800 draft standard that is targeted for large-scale solar, storage and wind plants will be presented. The draft technical minimum requirements specified in P2800 for the interconnection of large-scale, transmission- and sub-transmission-connected inverter-based resources (IBRs) may become important elements in the North American and international framework to maintain the reliability of the bulk power system with increasing amounts of IBRs, including those radially connected via VSC-HVDC facilities to the grid. This webinar aims to review the purpose and scope of the draft standard along with selected draft requirements; followed by time for Q&A. The IEEE P2800 draft standard has successfully passed the IEEE SA initial ballot and has reached almost a 90% approval rate among the SA balloters in its 1st recirculation. At the time of this webinar, the draft may have undergone its 2nd recirculation and could be on its path towards approval by the IEEE SA Standards Board with publication expected in 2022.

IEEE PES FORT WORTH MONTHLY MEETING – OCTOBER 19TH, 2021

Fort Worth IEEE PES members, we will have our next IEEE PES virtual meeting on October 19th from 11:30am to 1:00pm. We have the President of Transformer Consulting Services Inc., Ronnie Minhaz, speaking on the quality assurance of transformers. Please attend if you can!

Abstract:

The manufacturing of Transformer is integrated to global supply chain. With the improvement of technology, the design and manufacturing of transformer can be more aggressive such as reduce clearance and use of pure mineral oil during FAT to ensure the passing of tests during FAT. Clean room and environmental condition can be compromised during the manufacturing process which can have impact in the life expectancy of transformer. This presentation will walk through the quality assurance of transformer during the manufacturing of transformer.
