Central Illinois Welcomes a Brand New IEEE Computer Society Chapter
The IEEE Central Illinois Section (CILS) is pleased to announce that it has officially formed a new Computer Society (CS) Chapter. The new chapter will be led by IEEE CILS Educational Activities Chair Darryl Palmer.
About the IEEE Computer Society
Initially established in May 1946 as the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) Subcommittee on Large-Scale Computing, the group later merged with the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) Professional Group on Electronic Computers. By 1963, these organizations united under the newly formed IEEE. In 1971, the computing group adopted its own constitution and bylaws, giving rise to the IEEE Computer Society we know today.
As of January 2025, IEEE Computer Society membership spans 157 countries and approximately 930 localized chapters. The society publishes numerous research journals, many of which are complimentary to CS members. It also maintains the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBoK) and hosts international conferences on topics such as computer architecture, cybersecurity, multimedia, and intelligent systems.
