UMD Student Grant Recipient Presentations – Tron (Electric Bike)
February 22, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm CST
With a world moving towards electrification it makes sense to electrify our means of transportation. A pedal bicycle is a means of transportation that almost every person has. Using 18650 lithium ion cells, a hub motor, motor controller, and throttle it is possible to turn a common pedal bike into an electric bike. The scope of our project was to convert a pedal bike into an electric bike. While doing so, a custom lithium ion battery pack was created, along with some extra features for the bike such as a speedometer and an app that tracks a person’s ride distances and occurrences. Once completed, it was found that it is possible to convert a pedal bike into an electric bike that will reach and sustain 25 mph on a flat surface. Through months of research and design we have successfully completed the system we strove to achieve.
