About IEEE
IEEE is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. IEEE and its members inspire a global community through IEEE’s highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities.
IEEE, pronounced “Eye-triple-E,” stands for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The association is chartered under this name and it is the full legal name. To learn more about the association’s name, for more information please read the History of IEEE.
About IEEE Section VTS
The Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) is composed of engineers, scientists, students, and technicians, interested in advancing the theory and practice of electrical engineering as it applies to the following areas:
- Land Transportation
- Railroad/Mass Transit
- Mobile Communications
- Vehicular Electrotechnology Equipment and Systems
- Land, Airborne and Maritime Mobile Services
Function
The function of the Society is to promote its objectives through the leadership of its Officers and Members in encouraging the exchange of both technical and professional information among members of the Society, and other groups, societies, and chapters of the IEEE. This function is accomplished by means of:
- Sponsoring technical conferences and seminars
- Publication of technical journals and books
- Awards of recognition for excellence
- Participation in the development of standards
- Membership support activities
Conference Records
The record of each Society conference, which contains all technical papers presented there, is provided to each conference registrant as part of his/her registration package. It is also available to Society members unable to attend the conference at a discounted price.
Magazine
Each member receives the Society’s Magazine. It contains the Presidents Message, Reports of Board of Director meetings, Chapter News, Professional Activities, and special reports on Transportation Systems, Communications, and Vehicular Electronics, News from Washington, Awards, and other items of interest to the membership.
VTS Mobile World
Each member receives the monthly e-newsletter VTS Mobile World, which includes timely articles in the Society’s field of interest.
IEEE Press Books
The Society sponsored a 375-page book entitled, Land-Mobile Communications Engineering which is a compilation of 38 reprint papers organized into three parts, mobile radio propagation mobile data communications, and mobile communications above 800 MHz. Members receive a substantial discount when purchasing the book from IEEE Press. The Society plans further Press Books and seek contributing authors.
Meetings
The Society sponsors the Vehicular Technology Conference. The VTC has been noted for the high quality of its technical papers and presenters. Innovative engineering developments are frequently first publicly disclosed at these conferences. The VTC was held annually from 1950 through 1998. Beginning in 1999, it is held semi-annually.
Along with the SAE, the Society was a founding sponsor of the Convergence conferences held in Dearborn, MI biennially. This conference is primarily devoted to vehicular and automotive electronics engineering. Because of its great success, Convergence has now become an independent organization.
The Society is a cosponsor of a joint IEEE/ASME Railroad Conference held annually. Sponsorship alternates between the Society and the Railroad Division, ASME.Joint participation and sponsorship of publications and conference sessions with the other Societies of the IEEE and other organizations such as the Institution of Electrical Engineers (UK) has been a customary practice.
Chapters located throughout North America, Europe and Asia hold meetings throughout the year, frequently as joint chapters with other Societies of the IEEE.
