Integration of Renewable Distributed Generation into Microgrids: An Overview

by

Tarek Masaud, Ph.D.

When: Monday, December 21, 2020 – 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm Where: Zoom – https://wvu.zoom.us/j/91682502766

Bio of Dr. Tarek Masaud: received BSc degree from 7th of April University, Sabrata, Libya in 2003. M.Sc and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Colorado school of Mines, CO, USA in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Currently, he is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering at Marshall University, Huntington, WV, USA. His research interests are integration of renewable energy systems and storage systems in Microgrids and distribution network, including technical and economic aspects.

Abstract: To foster sustainable, low-emission development, many countries are establishing ambitious renewable energy targets for their electricity supply. Because solar and wind tend to be more variable and uncertain than conventional sources, meeting these targets will involve changes to power system planning and operations. Grid integration is the practice of developing efficient ways to deliver variable renewable energy (VRE) to the grid. Good integration methods maximize the cost-effectiveness of incorporating VRE into the power system while maintaining or increasing system stability and reliability. Microgrids with their decentralized system operations offer solutions to the challenges posed by net load variability resulted from high penetration of renewable generation. Although microgrid deployment is rapidly growing, there are still many challenges to optimally operate microgrids when operating in grid-connected or islanded mode. In this talk, I will present a review of issues concerning microgrids and provides an account of research in areas related to microgrid optimization with high penetration level of distributed renewable energy sources. I will also share my experience in engaging undergraduate students in research at Marshall University.
