This presentation will take us through the steps utilized to mitigate the hazardous conditions posed by aging equipment, unstable subsurface, and deteriorating infrastructure at the Amesbury #5 Substation in Amesbury, MA, National Grid’s territory. One of the many challenges facing the electric utility industry in the Northeast US is the maintenance and replacement of equipment which is due for retirement or replacement. The case study of the Amesbury #5 Substation is no different. We will discuss the background of the civil challenges that kicked off the project as well as the engineering studies and mitigation strategies to prevent equipment failure at the site. We will also cover the electrical design process used to maintain electric service reliability to customers served by the substation while creating a solution that removed the imminent risk.
