IEEE Winnipeg Section AGM
The IEEE Winnipeg Section Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on January 26, 2016 at the Viscount Gort Hotel. The meeting agenda featured guest speakers, a short review of the 2015 activities, and the election of the 2016 officials, and a turkey buffet dinner.
The guest speakers for the evening were:
- Prof. David Barber, Director, Centre for Earth Observation Science, delivered an engaging presentation on the polar ice cap research being conducted at the University of Manitoba. He highlighted many applications of Electrical and Computer Engineering that enable his research, challenges in the field, and future collaborations between engineers and scientists to advance the research further.
- Ms. Lesley McFarlane, President of Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (EGM) and past IEEE Winnipeg Section Chair brought greetings on behalf of EGM.
- Mr. Loren Hendrickson, CARIC Regional Director for Central Canada, highlighted the types of research collaborations between industry and academia supported by CARIC and the potential benefits to the aerospace industry in Manitoba.
- Mr. Dave Kemp, VP Grants for the IEEE Canadian Foundation (ICF), provided an overview of the projects supported by the ICF, reminded student branches to apply for funding, and encouraged members to contribute to the foundation.
- Prof. Witold Kinsner, President of IEEE Canada, described the vision and goals for IEEE Canada for the upcoming year and reminded members of the immense value of IEEE for society.
Dr. Puyan Mojabi, 2015 IEEE Winnipeg Chair, presented some highlights from the past year including the formation of a new joint chapter for Geoscience & Remote Sensing Society and the Aerospace & Electronic Systems Society, finalizing the registration of the joint Robotics & Controls Chapter, and moving the operating account to IEEE Concentration Banking.
The election of the new IEEE Winnipeg Section officers for 2016:
- Chair – Mr. Dario Schor, Magellan Aerospace
- Vice-Chair – Prof. Ekram Hossain, University of Manitoba
- Treasurer – Steven Howell, Manitoba Hydro
- Secretary – Trevor Brown , University of Manitoba
The evening concluded with a few short statements from the incoming officers on the plans for 2016.

On January 20th ICF Members Dave Kemp and Wayne Wagner visited the University of Manitoba McNaughton Learning Resource Centre hosted by Chair Eric Karr.

PCB, Linux, and Arduino Workshops at the University of Manitoba
The University of Manitoba Student Branch is hosting several workshops this month at the University of Manitoba Fort Garry campus. These workshops include:
- Beginner PCB Design with Altium Workshop (March 5, 6:00pm – 8:00pm, Location TBA)
- Linux Tutorial (March 10, 6:00pm, Location TBA)
- Advanced Arduino Workshop (March 13, 6:00pm, Location TBA)

Manitoba Robot Games Volunteer Opportunity
The Manitoba Robot Games are coming up on March 19th 2016 at Tec-Voc High School and Robot Games Volunteer Committee are once again looking for volunteers to help with various duties.
Volunteering at the robot games is an easy and fun way to promote science and engineering in Manitoba, help out with the education of kids, meet other professionals, and pick up some participation professional development hours.

All-Girls CodeMakers Camp this Summer
WISE Kid-Netic Energy is hosting several CodeMakers camps this summer, available to girls in Grades 7-9.
We’re really excited to offer an all-girls environment for those who would like to try out coding. Girls will have the opportunity to play and create with littleBits, Snap Circuits, Lego MINDSTORMS, Arduinos and Dash robots. The program will be led by a female instructors pursuing undergraduate degrees in computer science and/or engineering. We will also have snacks, lots of icebreakers and incorporate outdoor play. This project sponsored by Google is part of a national campaign to get more youth interested in programming.

Manitoba Space Adventure Camp
Wise Kid-Netic Energy is hosting a week-long Space Adventure Camp at the University of Manitoba on July 11-15, 2016, open to students in grades 9 to 11. The camp will explore the frontiers of science and engineering. For more information, see the event poster below:
