Greg Smelich, Product Engineer
Ultra-high-speed tripping will soon be the new norm as evolving power systems drive the quest for faster transmission line protection. Faster tripping improves safety, reduces damage to equipment, and widens power system stability margins. SEL time-domain line protection elements, found in the new SEL-T400L Time-Domain Line Protection relay, detect internal line faults within 1-4 milliseconds. These elements include incremental quantity distance elements (TD21), incremental quantity directional elements (TD32), traveling-wave directional elements (TW32), and traveling wave line current differential elements (TW87). In this presentation, Greg Smelich of SEL will review these time-domain line protection elements and illustrate their performance using real-world faults and digital simulations.
