Research plans and needs for the Nordic transmission-system operators

Luleå University of Technology and IEEE Sweden, 11 November 2020, via Teams.

Registration (by November 4th) on https://simplesignup.se/private_event/173568/d361cfe70a

There  is  lots of talk  about  changes in  electricity  production  and  consumption,  from LED  lamps to  electrification of the steel industry, from bicycle lanes producing electricity to a new generation of nuclear  power station. This webinar is not about all those changes, but about the large transmission system  covering Norway, Sweden and Finland, that ensures that it all works in the way that the customers want.

Today’s seminar will be given by the persons in charge of research at the transmission-system operators  in those three countries: Statnett, Svenska kraftnät and Fingrid. They will tell us about the ongoing  research and about their need for research, all so that they can keep on ensuring that everything will go  as it should. As the brief CVs below show, all three have many years of experience in R&D as seen from  the transmission system operator.

•    Opening and introduction, Math Bollen, Luleå University of Technology  • The view from Finland, Jussi Matilainen, Fingrid

•    The view from Norway, Sonja Berlijn, Statnett

•    The view from Sweden, Göran Ericsson, Svenska kraftnät

•    Discussion moderated by Ambra Sannino, DNVGL

Jussi Matilainen is R&D Manager at Fingrid, a position he has held since 2010. He joined Fingrid in  1997.  He  received  the  Master  degree  in  Energy  Technology  from  Lappeentanta  University  of  Technology and the Licentiate degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Aalto University.

Sonja Berlijn is senior vice president R&D at Statnett, a role she has held since 2015, and professor at  the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), since 2014. Before joining Statnett in 2008, she  was employed at STRI in Sweden and at KEMA High Voltage Laboratories in The Netherlands. She  received the Master degree in Electrical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology, the  PhD degree from the Technical University Graz, and the MBA degree from Melbourne University.

Göran Ericsson is Head of R&D at Svenska kraftnät, since 2009, and adjunct professor at KTH Royal  Institute of Technology, since 2014. He joined Svenska kraftnät in 1997. He received the MSc degree  from Uppsala University, the MSc degree from Case Western University, and the PhD degree from KTH  Royal University of Technology.

Ambra Sannino is Business Director for Power system analysis at DNV GL. Before joining DNV GL  in 2019, she held several research and management positions at ABB in Sweden. She is chair of the joint  PES/PEL chapter of IEEE Sweden. She received the MSc and PhD degrees from the University of  Palermo.
