Abstract:
Worldwide power systems are facing big changes due to the large-scale introduction of renewables, closing of conventional production units, changes in the load behaviour and the introduction of market based ancillary services. All the ongoing changes highlight the need for more focus on the frequency control in the power system and verification of the frequency control of production units participating in the different markets. This lecture starts by presenting the fundamentals of frequency control in a power system. It then continues with presenting tests of production units participating in frequency control and island operation. Finally, results are presented from full scale tests performed in a small islanded system of 70 MW, a small national power system of 2500 MW and the Nordic power system.
Biography:
Evert Agneholm obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Power Engineering from Chalmers University in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1993 and 1999, respectively.
Today, Dr. Agneholm is a Senior Principal Engineer in the Power System Analysis department in DNV GL Energy. He has long experience of both theoretical work as well as field studies, both AC and HVDC, particularly in projects related to frequency and voltage control of the power system.
For several years, Dr. Agneholm has been the technical lead in joint projects of the Nordic TSOs related to the development of harmonized frequency control products for the Nordic market. Dr. Agneholm is also active in academia, as a part time Adjunct Professor at University West in Sweden.
