Highly-digital approaches towards analog design : smaller, smarter, unfailing

2019-08-30 @ 10:00 - 11:00

Speaker: Prof. Georges Gielen, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium

Abstract

Emerging applications are creating a smart world that immersively impacts our daily life, work and play. The Internet of Things, autonomous vehicles, biomedical monitoring, among many others, are all applications that highly depend on inputs from sensors. This presentation will focus on design and CAD techniques to make these interfaces smaller, smarter and unfailing. The approach taken heavily relies on highly-digital time-based design architectures on the one hand, on detailed reliability modeling and mitigation on the other hand, and on sophisticated test and DfT approaches for the detection of defective ICs before rollout. This presentation will explore the boundaries for the design of ultra-small and ultra-reliable sensor interfaces.

Bio

Georges G.E. Gielen received the MSc and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgium, in 1986 and 1990, respectively. In 1990, he was appointed as a postdoctoral research assistant and visiting lecturer at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of the University of California, Berkeley. From 1991 to 1993, he was a postdoctoral research assistant of the Belgian National Fund of Scientific Research (FWO) at the ESAT laboratory of KU Leuven. In 1993, he was appointed assistant professor at KU Leuven, where he later promoted to associate professor, professor and finally Full Professor in 2003. His research interests are in the design of analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits, and especially in analog and mixed-signal CAD tools and design automation (modeling, simulation and symbolic analysis, analog synthesis, analog layout generation, analog and mixed-signal testing). He is a Fellow of the IEEE since 2002.
