Reinventing computing for a data-driven world

Tuesday, 6 August 2019, 6:30pm – 8:30pm, Singapore Polytechnic

IEEE Singapore Computer Society presents you a technical event co-organized by IEEE Singapore Computer Society and Singapore Polytechnic.

Executive Summary & Outline:

Data explosion is not coming – it’s here, and it’s only getting bigger. The next stage of technology will need to accommodate unprecedented amounts of data-driven by 100s of billions of devices and sensors that comprise the “Internet of Things” – stretching our technology capabilities to the limit and beyond. At the same time, we’re operating in an increasingly insecure, unmanageable and risky environment – from a technology, business, and societal perspective. If we don’t find a way to change today’s computing architectures, they simply won’t be able to keep up – and then we won’t be able to obtain the resources needed to power and sustain them.

In this talk, I will present how Hewlett Packard Labs address these radical changes by innovating technology in the areas of photonics, silicon design, memory-driven computing, security, AI, and edge. By working closely from customer requirements and focusing on HPE productization opportunities, we deliver innovation that matters. I will provide specific examples of research projects, such as unconventional architectures, programming, and accelerators, new approaches to security, etc. This way we are able to address the limits imposed by post-Moore’s Law and the onslaught of generated data.

IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Visitor Program Series

2020: Toward Practical Quantum Networks

Tuesday, 5 December 2017, 3:00pm – 5:00pm

IEEE Singapore Computer Society presents you a technical event as follows.

DESCRIPTION

What is a quantum network? What makes quantum communications different from classical wired/wireless communications? Why is so hard to design a quantum network? Why so much excitement about quantum paradigm? What already accomplished? What next?

Very recently, researchers worldwide have started to devote massive efforts in designing and implementing quantum computation, with 17-qubit computing processors already prototyped and several groups making very fast progress towards the 50-qubit regime.

Nevertheless, to fully unleash the ultimate vision of the quantum revolution, it is necessary to design and to implement quantum networks, able to connect distant quantum processors through remote quantum entanglement distribution. However, despite the tremendous progress of quantum technologies, long-distance efficient entanglement distribution still constitutes a key issue, and several key research issues must be addressed to design and eventually deploy quantum networks.

Hence, this talk aims at providing the participants with a wide view about quantum networks and the unique challenges for transmitting quantum information.
