High bandwidth SATCOM is rapidly becoming a standard aircraft feature and a key enabler for numerous revenue generating services. Multiple service providers continue to plan satellite constellations in support of ubiquitous low-latency, wideband communication over a global grid. In addition, the proliferation of terrestrial 5G that includes mm-Wave bands provides an attractive opportunity to finally link terrestrial with space-based assets. However, an airborne SATCOM terminal’s challenging environment and difficult performance requirements increase costs and limit its applicability and use. This talk provides existing options for mobile airborne terminals and key developments in the near-term to achieve ubiquitous low-latency wideband SATCOM
