What You Wish You Had Known about IP Law Before You Invented Something

July 1, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

You do not need to go beyond Silicon Valley to realize the importance of intellectual property (IP) law in our economy. Ever wonder what exactly IP law is and how it could impact your new idea and business? Join us for an overview of the fundamentals of intellectual property to help engineers and entrepreneurs develop a working knowledge to protect and capitalize innovations, as well as to understand the associated legal risks. This presentation will first introduce the major legal frameworks for IP – patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets – as well as the various advantages and drawbacks for each of those categories. Next, we will discuss the means by which you can protect inventions and at the same time, anticipate risks and liabilities from potential adversaries. Lastly, we will briefly review some hypothetical scenarios in which intellectual property issues may arise (e.g. who owns what) and some practical tips for a new inventor or a burgeoning business venture.
