ABSTRACT:
Vehicle Safety Communication is has been a topic of interest spanning over two decades, tracing roots to “Intelligent Vehicle Highway System” and transforming to 802.11p-based OBSS ad hoc communications, enabling Wireless Access for Vehicular Environments (WAVE) standards in the US and perhaps ultimately to a potential Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) mandate or rule for V2V safety transceivers to be installed in vehicles. The promise is huge: over 80% of unimpaired multi-vehicle crashes in the US can be addressed.

In recent years, cellular connectivity is considered in some entities and some world regions as a viable alternative, even for safety-of-life applications. Use of mobile edge computing for V2I, I2V and via transitivity for V2V is a topic of active investigation, and recent and significant 3GPP standardization activities in sidelink for cellular V2X has elicited additional interest.

This talk summarizes these trends and prognosticates connected vehicle futures, given that there are different use cases, different regulatory and spectrum requirements in different world regions. In the end, the promise will be again invoked, this time with mobility and other connectivity goals that may complement safety.

SPEAKER: Jim Misener, Director, Technical Standards at Qualcomm

Jim Misener leads automotive standards activities for Qualcomm and participates in many standards fora, to include as immediate past Chair and current Vice Chair of the SAE DSRC Technical Committee and participation as US ISO TC204 expert and at lower layers with IEEE and 3GPP. He also provides broad internal consultation and support with automotive and transportation matters on emerging technologies, standards, deployment and spectrum issues. Jim was early pioneer in vehicle-highway automation at the California Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways (PATH) at UC Berkeley in the mid 1990s. He has been PATH Executive Director, Executive Advisor to Booz Allen Hamilton, and an independent consultant with clients ranging from Silicon Valley startups, the automotive industry and Federal and State government agencies. Jim holds BS and MS degrees from UCLA and USC.
