A PLATFORM COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY FOR VEHICLE-VEHICLE & VEHICLE-CONTROL OFFICE WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS

January 25, 2017 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm

Presentation by:  Shiwen_Mao-DL Jan 2017

ABSTRACT

In the first part of this talk, we will review the general concept of mobile communication/networking that will be the fundamental platform on which VTS’ future developments shall be based. Such technology would be the backbone for individual cars to communicate. In the second part of this talk, we will present a recent advance on how to monitor vital signs with WiFi signals, such as breathing and heartbeat. We present PhaseBeat, an RF sensing tool to exploit channel state information (CSI) phase difference data to monitor breathing and heartbeat with commodity WiFi devices. Our experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of PhaseBeat over existing approaches in various indoor environments. These technologies could also be useful for autonomous vehicles applications, such as tracking the location of a vehicle in both indoor and out door environments, and monitoring the health of the passenger in case of medical emergency and automatically request assistance from health services providers. The third part of this talk will be on millimeter wave communications and future 5G wireless systems. We will introduce a recent work on a medium access protocol for millimeter wave personal area networks, which can also serve as a candidate for in-vehicle communications.
