Seminar: "High-Performance Microwave Active Circuits for Some Interesting Applications" – ATLANTA AP03/MTT17 CHAPTER on 25-February-2014

Saturday, February 8th, 2014

This talk will present an overview of the activities in the microwave group at the University of Colorado, Boulder, followed by a more detailed discussion of a few specific projects: (1) high-efficiency microwave transmitters for non-constant envelope communication and radar signals, from 3kW to 5W in power level, and 450MHz to 10GHz in frequency; (2) micro-fabricated G-band frequency-steered antenna arrays for planetary landing radar operating in the 130 to 180GHz frequency range; (3) microwave radiometers for internal body thermometry, and time permitting, (4) far-field wireless powering for low-power wireless sensors. Related to the first topic, for example, several transmitters will be presented, for applications such as wind-profiling radar with 3-kW LDMOS pulsed 449-MHz PAs with efficiencies greater than 65%, to S-band hybrid GaN PAs with 10W output power and PAE>80% and X-band 10-W MMIC GaN PAs with PAE>60%. These amplifiers are integrated into transmitters that use different architectures to maintain efficiency for varying amplitude signals, such as supply modulation, outphasing and harmonic injection.

"Introduce a Girl To Engineering Day" with IEEE Atlanta WIE @ IVY Prep VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – ATLANTA WOMEN IN ENGINEERING AFFINITY GROUP on 20-February-2014

Wednesday, January 29th, 2014

Please join the IEEE Atlanta Women in Engineering for National Engineers Week’s “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” at Ivy Preparatory Academy in Gwinnett on Thursday February 20, 2014 from 9am to 11am.

We are going to work with 300 girls in 16 classes design a “dance pad” circuit. It’s all about working in teams, design, trial, error and discovery. It’s lots of fun to work with the girls and other great adults.

Anyone with engineering interest can volunteer – women, men, IEEE or not, etc. We’d love to have students from local engineering groups join us. Please register here and use this this link to sign up for a class.

Please also forward this notice to anyone you think may be interested. We need 40 – 50 volunteers to support 2 – 3 volunteers per class.

Training (along with dinner and networking) will be provided on February 6th at the Georgia Tech Research Institute in Midtown. For more information and to register follow this link:

Questions? Please email or call Bridget (IEEE Atlanta WIE Vice Chair) @678 446-0392

Cyber-Physical Systems at Small and Large Scales – ATLANTA AES10/GRS29 CHAPTER on 19-February-2014

Friday, January 10th, 2014

Cyber-physical systems have received a great deal of attention in recent years, but decades after we began to use computers to control physical systems. We will start with a few remarks on the definition of cyber-physical system and challenges in the field. We will then go on to describe two research projects on CPS at very different levels of physical granularity.

At the small end of the scale, we explored the relationship between schedulability and stability in control systems in collaboration with Prof. Fumin Zhang’s group. Both control theory and real-time systems theory traditionally view the sample period as involate. However, most real-time scheduling algorithms do introduce jitter in the execution interval of tasks. Until recently, the relationship between the schedulability of tasks and the stability of the control system had not been explored. We used Lyapunov analysis to show that, for a class of simple control systems running under rate-monotonic analysis, the goals of stability and schedulability are, in fact, consistent.

At the large end of the scale, my student Umer Tariq and I are collaborating with Prof. Santiago Grijalva’s group on distributed system architectures for smart energy grids based on the prosumer model. We have developed a multi-layer architecture for distributed control of smart energy systems based on a Web services model. At the RTOS layer, we use an API translator to map generic software onto target RTOSs. At the Web level, we have developed a model for hard real-time Web services.
