Overview of IEEE Standards And IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Standards Activities Sub Division

“Overview of IEEE Standards And IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Standards Activities Sub Division”

Dr. Yen-Kuang Chen, VP, Technical Activities, IEEE CASS

Dr. Kiran Gunnam, Industry Member of BoG, IEEE CASS

Event Organized By:

Circuits and Systems Society (CASS) of the IEEE Santa Clara Valley Section

Abstract:

The IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CASS) recently approved establishing the Standards Activities Sub Division (SASD) under its Technical Activities (TA) Division. IEEE CASS SASD will be starting efforts to provide core standards for the benefit of industry including integrated circuit design and test systems, arithmetic, microprocessors, domain-specific accelerators such as error correction coding, video, and AI. These standards help enable industry to move technology forward at a rapid pace to deliver amazing products to consumers. By working with the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA), IEEE CASS would be able to provide a globally open, inclusive, and transparent environment for market-relevant, voluntary consensus standardization, and other industry consensus activities in the Circuits and Systems area.

The mission of this new initiative by IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CASS) Standards Activities Board (SASD) is to encourage all the relevant stakeholders to participate in standardization activities, to promote the use of IEEE standards, and to develop useful products that leverage IEEE standards within the scope of the CASS. This new initiative also promotes and fosters academic and industry participation by engaging a broader community by drawing members from various IEEE CASS Technical Committees (TC). Also, professionals or ad-hoc industry groups who are actively working on standardization activities related to CASS are invited to bring their activities under the umbrella of IEEE CASS SASD to utilize the broader impact of IEEE Standards.

Bio of Speakers:

Dr. Yen-Kuang Chen (VP of Technical Activities, IEEE CASS)

Board Member of IEEE CASS & Interim CASS Standard Activity Sub Division

Dr. Chen is an IEEE Fellow and the Senior Director of Alibaba DAMO Academy. He has 80+ US patents and 100+ technical publications. He is one of the key contributors to Supplemental Streaming SIMD Extension 3 in Intel(R) Core™ 2 Duo processors. His research interests include developing innovative multimedia applications, studying the performance bottleneck in current computer platforms, and designing next-generation processors with multiple cores. In terms of standard activities, he was a US delegate for MPEG (ISO/IEC JTC/SC29/WG11) meetings from 1999 to 2001. He was the co-chair of the MPEG-4 Intellectual Property Management and Protection Ad Hoc Group, and chair of the MPEG Study on Standard Digital Watermarking Technology Ad Hoc Group. He has made 13 contributions to MPEG standards.

Dr. Kiran Gunnam (IEEE CASS BOG member)

Chair of IEEE CASS Interim Standard Activities Sub Division

Dr. Gunnam currently works as Distinguished Engineer – Machine Learning & Computer Vision at Western Digital Research, USA. He has 86 US patents and his patented work has already been incorporated in more than 2 billion data storage and Wi-Fi chips and is set to continue to be incorporated in more than 500 million chips per year.

Dr. Gunnam has been involved with IEEE standards association since 2013. He played a crucial role in the initiative of Dr. Yen-Kuang Chen (

CASS VP Technical Activities ) in establishing CASS SASD. He is currently serving as an interim chair for IEEE CASS SASD.
