The IBM Albany Technical Vitality Council, IBM’s Mid-Hudson Technical Vitality Affiliate, IEEE Electron Device Society, Schenectady Chapter are hosting our 2018 IEEE Nanotechnology Symposium (ANTS). The conference will feature oral presentations and posters by authors from the industry, academia, federal and private research institutions. The goal of the conference is to promote cross-functional and interdisciplinary research and provide the opportunity to present any recent non-confidential work related to semiconductor scaling, packaging, manufacturing, memory technologies, artificial intelligence and nanosciences.
The program will consist of a keynote by Dr. John Cohn, IBM Fellow, and EDS distinguished lecture by Dr. Rajiv Joshi, IEEE Fellow and IBM Master Inventor. There will be oral presentations from both invited speakers and participants. In addition, poster sessions will provide a less formal venue and allow for in-depth discussions. Registration is free and all attendees are required to pre-register online. Accepted papers meeting IEEE quality standards and format requirements will be published in the Proceedings of 2018 IEEE Nanotechnology Symposium (ANTS) in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library.
We will also be hosting a Women in Engineering (WIE) event on November 14th from 5 pm to 7 pm, to be attended by women engineers from industry and academia. Attendance to this event is on a first come first serve basis and is only open to the first 50 applicants.
Winners in the following categories will be recognized at the end of the conference: Best Poster Presentation, Best Oral Presentation (Student/Professional/New-hire categories).

Robert Fenton, President of Generator Technology Consultants. Dr. Fenton is a former General Manager of GE Power Generation, was Treasurer of the Power and Energy Society, and is a Life Fellow of that Society.
Ronald Halpern, President of Generator Consulting Services, Inc. is also a past General Electric Engineer and brings a mechanical perspective to the team.
Clyde V. Maughan, President of Maughan Generator Consultants after a 36-year career (1950-86) with General Electric. Clyde is focused is on passing on to the next generations of generator maintenance engineers the knowledge of his generation of generator engineers, which is generous. He is author or coauthor of around 40 major technical papers and a 240-page text on generator repair.

ABSTRACT:
In high performance magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems, the gradient driver is required to supply the gradient coil with large current (>600A) and high voltage (>2000V) to achieve strong gradient field and fast slew rate. In addition, extremely high fidelity for reproducing the current command from the central system is very critical for imaging quality. This paper presents the solutions for the different elements of the driver: high bandwidth power inverter, ripple cancellation filter, multi-output power supply and digital control.
High BW power inverter requires stacked bridges structure to allow high output frequency. The high voltage and high frequency for large power modules benefits by low switching loss modules using SiC devices. The control needs a digital implementation and a very fast processor. Digital control provides compensation and feedforward to improve the response. A capability improvement is obtained by reducing the switching frequency when large currents with very low frequency variation are needed. Control can handle it very well, but the filter has to be designed to eliminate more than one ripple frequency. Finally, many power supply solutions have been used for multiple isolated outputs, but digital control compensation permits the use of much simpler unregulated power supply and keep the performance.
A 2 MVA, 900A/1200V, platform has been built and fully tested. The experimental results proved the validity of the proposed structure and modulation technique.
