Students of S4-EEE undertook an industrial visit. Altogether there were 35 students, 2 faculty members and a parent in the group. The industrial visit was scheduled from February 23 2018 to February 25 2018.The visit was arranged to Radio Astronomy Centre, Ooty. The three day IV commenced upon departure at 08.30 pm. Our destination was Ooty. Fr. Dr. Thomas Melvattathu addressed the students, Faculty and parent representative. After a brief prayer we started towards ourdestination. We all arrived there at 06.00 am. After fresh up and breakfast from Ooty we visited Radio Astronomy Centre, Ooty. First the students were shown a detailed video on the establishment and working of the Radio Astronomy Centre. The Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT, as it is known) is a cylindrical paraboloid of reflecting surface, 530 m long and 30 m wide, placed on a hill whose slope of about 11 degree in the north-south direction which is the same as the latitude of the location of ORT. This makes it possible to track celestial objects for about 10 hours continuously from their rising in east to their setting in the west by simply rotating the antenna mechanically along its long axis. The reflecting surface is made up of 1100 thin stainless steel wires, each 530 m long. It is supported by 24 parabolic frames separated by 23 m from each other. The telescope is operated at 326.5 MHz (a wavelength of 0.92 m) with 15 MHz usable bandwidth. The large size of the telescope makes it highly sensitive. As an example, it is in principle capable of detecting signals from a mere 1 watt radio station located ten million kilo meter away in space. The ORT completed in 1970 and continues to be one of the most sensitive radio telescopes in the world. Observations made using this telescope have led to important discoveries and to explain various phenomena occurring in our Solar system and in other celestial bodies. After visit to the academy we headed towards Ooty Lake were the students went for boating and other recreational activities. After lunch we went to Benchmark Tea factory at Ooty. The processing of the tea leaf to different variety of tea powder were discussed and shown. There were facility to shop tea powder and we were able to taste the freshly made tea. After that the students left for Botanical Gardens Ooty, were different types of flowers and plants. Then students were left for shopping near botanical garden. After that we had dinner and also had a campfire at night before leaving. Finally at 10:00 pm we started our return journey to VJEC. Arrived VJEC at 05:00 am safely and successfully after the IV.
