On 1/2/2018 we had a webinar conducted by the IEEE- IAS student branch of Vimal Jyothi Engineering College, Chemperi.The webinar was on the topic ‘Electrical Safety Integration into New Production Facility’. It was led by Mr. Mark Scarborough. Almost 20 students attended the webinar. This was actually a fantastic experience for all of us .We have attended the ordinary face-to-face seminar. But this was for the first time that we are attending a online seminar. All of were really excited to know how it was carried out. Our faculty had well prepared the arrangements for the webinar before-hand. This webinar is based on a paper presented in Reno, NV at the 2017 IEEE IAS Electrical Safety Workshop. It described the basic elements of a company’s generic, region based electrical safety program and a new facility’s experience in implementing the program during the initial system turnover and energization phases of the project. Background on the site’s safety by design considerations, arc flash hazard assessment, equipment inspection and testing and organizational makeup provides insight on how the facility managed to tailor the ‘generic’ program to their site needs and train the organization. Specific examples highlight the need to thoroughly commission electrical equipment and systems after construction turnover while balancing leadership pressures regarding cost and schedule. The challenges of energizing equipment during ongoing construction, equipment failure, and managing contract workers performing equipment commissioning were also discussed. The session was about 2 hours. First there was an introduction section. Then the seminar began. The session was very clear. We could get a better idea about the electrical safety programs, site’s safety by design considerations, arc flash hazard assessment, equipment inspection and testing, etc. Also there was a doubt clearance session at the end of the webinar. By the end of the session we could relative the relevance of this topic to our stream of study and also how this will be beneficial in our carrier.
