The Intelligent Systems Laboratory (iSL) and the IEEE Student Branch – Lamia organized an event for graduate students of the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics, titled “Next step after graduation“, on Friday 11 June, 19:00.
Speakers:
E. Arvaniti, IT Infrastructure Project Manager, shared her experience as a graduate working abroad.
A. Sarma, General Manager, Orange Grove, introduced us to the entrepreneurship world.
A. Kakarountas, Associate Professor, presented the evolution of a research lab through the success stories of its graduates.
“I.T. Applications in Healthcare” Webinar | 21.05.2021
The IEEE Student Branch of the University of Thessaly, Lamia organized an online seminar titled “I.T. Applications in Healthcare” on May 21 at 18:30. The lectures were delivered by faculty members of the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics of the School of Sciences in Lamia, Lecturer Karanikas Haralampos and Assistant Professor Tasoulis Sotirios. Mr. Karanikas’ speech titled “eHealth Infrastructures in Greece” and Mr. Tasoulis’ speech titled “Random Projections in Data Mining Applications” aimed to present examples of computer science implementations in biomedicine, as well as familiarize the participants with eHealth and Big Data. The webinar was held on Microsoft Teams and it was open to the public.
Webinar titled “LaTeX and Overleaf” | 26.03.2021
The IEEE Student Branch of the University of Thessaly, Lamia organized an online seminar titled “LaTeX and Overleaf” on March 26 at 18:00. The lectures were delivered by the associate professors of the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics of the School of Sciences in Lamia, Mr. Vasileios Drakopoulos and Mr. Athanasios Kakarountas. Mr. Drakopoulos’ speech titled “TeX and LaTeX: The Art of Typesetting” and Mr. Kakarountas’ speech titled “Writing a scientific article using Overleaf” aimed to present LaTeX and Overleaf, as well as familiarize the participants with the software. The webinar was held on Microsoft Teams, it was open to the public and it was recorded and posted on the branch’s YouTube channel.
Meet The Labs | 08.12.2020
On December 8 our student branch, in partnership with the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics of the University of Thessaly, coordinated the event “Meet The Labs”, which aimed to introduce the labs of our department and inform the public about the research they conduct.
Workshop: Ethical Hacking | 19.02.2020
On February 19, a workshop was held, at Lab 1 of the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics, regarding Ethical Hacking and its applications. Then, a discussion was carried out about the two main categories of hacking (Application Hacking και Web Hacking) by writing an exploit from scratch and taking live control of an FTP Server. Also, the technique of SQL Injection was presented. The Workshop included the implementation of a challenge! The presentation was given by the university students Aggelos Kalaitzidis and Stelios Restemis.
Image Editing Intro | 04.04.2019, 12.04.2019 and 16.04.2019
On April 4, April 12 and April 16, 2019, a workshop was held regarding “Image Editing Intro”, at Lab 1 of the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics of the University of Thessaly. During the workshop, the participants learned how to rotate an image, use drawing and selection tools, apply photo filters, etc. The program used was GIMP and a lot of students participated in it.

On December 8, 2018, the 10th Scientific Workshop on Cloud Technologies was held. Our sponsor ORACLE ACADEMY supported our effort. Our student branch participated as a strong team.
IEEE Xtreme 12.0 | 21.10.2018
On October 21, 2018, the competition IEEE Xtreme 12.0 took place at Lab 1 of the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics of the University of Thessaly in Lamia.
IEEE CASS lecture | 09.10.2018
In the context of IEEE CASS’ “Lectures from distinguished lecturers” program, a lecture was conducted by Dr. Hai “Helen” Li, Associate Professor at Duke University, North Carolina, about “Deep Learning and Neuromorphic Computing – Technology, Hardware and Implementation”. The lecture took place at the auditorium of the Aristotle University Research Dissemination Center on the 9th of October 2018 and was broadcasted to the local university students by the IEEE SB UTH Lamia.
Frameworks | 09.05.2018
On the 9th of May 2018, presentations on frameworks and programs were hosted by members of our student branch. Katerina Menichta presented Microsoft Office Publisher, followed by Georgios Manios presenting Autodesk’s SketchBook, a program where you can create and edit digital drawings. Then, demonstrations about the capabilities of the programs were carried out.
8th Workshop: “Security for everything, everyone, anytime” | 21.03.2017
The challenge to protect companies, citizens and Governments from online threats is more and more complex every day. The higher amount and sophistication of the attacks make it necessary to strengthen the systems. Improving the security of the technologies we use is possible but in order to achieve it, we need qualified professionals with deep knowledge of cybersecurity. The main goal of this workshop was to stimulate the early generation of talent that can be applied in their future careers, and for students to acquire advanced knowledge of information security, through a mainly practical approach and under the guidance of experts. The program included a poster session, talks by experts and a competition between students, among other activities.
“Internet of Things” Workshop | 22.11.2016 – 23.11.2016
On the 22nd and 23rd of November 2016, a workshop with the topic “Internet Of Things” took place at the University of Thessaly in Lamia, where speakers from various places in Greece were invited to share their views and ideas, and to inform us of the prospects of this fascinating new field. On the first day of the workshop, five lectures were given, the topics of which were the following: “Internet of Things on Medical Applications”, “the LoRaWAN Technology for supporting IoT”, “IoT on Microsoft Azure”, “Robots in assisted living environments unobtrusive, efficient, reliable and modular solutions for independent aging”, and “Data security and privacy in the age of the internet of things”. On the second day of the workshop, two lectures were given on the following topics: “Standardization activities and protocols for the Internet of Things” and “IoT technologies for the monitoring of patients and the support of independent living”. Apart from the speeches, an Arduino competition took place, where 4 teams consisting of 2-5 students demonstrated the projects that they had done. Afterwards, each member of the winning team was awarded a check of 50 euros to spend at a famous department store. All in all, the workshop was a success, with over 150 people attending. The event was conducted in a pleasant atmosphere with coffee and lunch breaks taking place after a certain period of time to ensure the vigilance of the speakers and the audience.
Participation in IEEEXtreme 10.0 | 22.10.2016
On October 22, 2016, 10 teams from the IEEE University of Thessaly (Lamia) Student Branch, each consisting of 2-3 students, participated in the IEEEXtreme 10.0 programming competition. The teams were the following: “TeamCotC”, “Hotkeyboards”, “Omegateam”, “TeamGTA”, “TeamCReal”, “123over”, “Error404NameNotF”, “Integers”, “PsychoProgA”, and “TehLurdOfTehRein”. All teams gathered in our University with our proctor, Dr. Athanasios Kakarountas. Throughout the 24-hour competition, we provided unlimited water, coffee and snacks to the participating teams in order for them to perform as best they could. After 24 non-stop hours of fun, no sleep, lots of caffeine and coding, IEEEXtreme 10.0 came to an end. In general, the event was conducted in a pleasant atmosphere and the students were fully concentrated on their work for the majority of the competition. The team that ranked first in our Student Branch, “TeamCotC”, took the 865th position in the global ranking and the 291st in Region 8.
Workshop Arduino | 14.01.2016
As a continuation of the Arduino Barcamp we organized in 2015, we decided to organize an Arduino Competition. On December 17, we had our first meeting in the auditorium of our University with more than 70 attendees. At the beginning of the meeting, our professor, Athanasios Kakarountas, gave a lecture on the fundamentals of the Arduino board and its programming. After the attendees were introduced to the Arduino board, they were separated into groups of 5-6 people in order to take on a project of their own choice, build it and present it at the end of the academic year, when it would compete with the other teams. For the realization of the project, each group was given an Arduino UNO microcontroller, as well as a budget for them to buy the components they would need. Before the competition took place, the 15 teams participated in weekly meetings to expand their knowledge on Arduino and discuss their project progress.

Press Start-Up Bootcamp, a series of seminars aiming at the development of Soft skills and the wholesome creation of startup companies, took place on the 10th, 12th, 14th and 21st of March at the premises of the School of Sciences of the University of Thessaly.

On December 3 to 11, 2013, the IEEE Computer Society UTH (Lamia) hosted the first IEEE Computer Society Android Development BootCamp: a series of lectures and tutorials regarding the development of Android applications.
IEEEXtreme 7.0 | 06.10.2013
On the 6th of October, the IEEE Xtreme 7.0 competition took place at the Department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics of the University of Thessaly. There were a lot of participants and the competition was carried out in a happy and cooperative atmosphere.
