Do you know students entering Grades 8 through 12 who would be interested in learning more about engineering? If so, consider telling their parents about IEEE’s TryEngineering Summer Camps. The theme of the camps is “Introduction to Engineering.”

The two-week sleepaway camps are scheduled to start on 1 July at four colleges in the United States: the University of California, Riverside; the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; Texas A&M University, in College Station; and Vaughn College, in Flushing, N.Y. The second session begins on 15 July.

The students are to participate in a variety of hands-on projects such as building and launching rockets and creating a robotic arm out of everyday materials. Some of the schools will offer access to their technology centers and labs to teach about 3D printers and other equipment.

Participants also will go on field trips to a theme park to learn how roller coasters are designed, as well as to a high-tech company to meet engineers and learn about their work.

The campers can learn what various disciplines have to offer. The curriculum includes lessons from aerospace, chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering.

The cost for children of IEEE members and IEEE employees is US $2,995; it’s $3,195 for those of nonmembers.

The cost includes three daily meals, a double-occupancy room in a college residence hall, a T-shirt, supplies, and transportation for field trips. Students may access the school’s athletic facilities.

Need-based scholarships are awarded to a few U.S. students interested in learning more about a career in engineering and technology. One full scholarship is available per university and per session. Four half scholarships per university per session are available as well. Selection criteria include a demonstrated financial need, a personal essay, and letters of recommendation. The scholarships cover tuition costs only. The deadline to submit is 30 March. You can find more information on financial assistance at the TryEngineering Summer Camps website.
